It really depends on what classes your high school has to offer, but some helpful classes to take are; yearbook or newspaper/newsmagazine, depending on what your school has to offer, computer graphics, all Photography classes, art history and creative writing. Any other art classes help build up your portfolio for college.

Mainly art- For the fact that you need to have a good imagination and you need to be able to link you work with the project you are working on it. For example if you are designing a logo for a slimy product, you want your design green and a slimy affect.

Another subject is ICT (computers)- Graphic designers do most of their work on a computer at home.

Hope this advice helps, good luck.

It depends on if you're talking about high school or college. In most high schools there isn't a specific graphic arts course to take. Any computer class above beginner level should help a little though. In college, some schools have an actual graphic design major. If your school doesn't have that then maybe a major in computer technology or advertising will help.

Take ANY art courses you can. Digital Photography will help and if your school offers it then I suggest taking a computer graphics course too. These will give you a solid foundation for the design element of graphic designing. If your school has any Adobe programs on their computers, I would also make friends with the teacher who manages them (the resident computer teacher, most likely the one who runs around the school fixing everyone's problems). He/She can give you tutorials and tips for Illustrator and Photoshop, and may even have "Classroom in a Book", which is a handy tutorial disk that takes you through the features and elements of the adobe programs. If you don't have any designing programs, it also helps to befriend these teachers, as they often have older versions of the software that you can get started on. I, personally, took digital photography, and basic arts courses through high school. I studied Illustrator in my spare time with my accounting teacher (He used to teach graphic design and marketing) who knew a lot about illustration and was able to pass on the Classroom-in-a-book for illustrator. When I graduated I had a superior knowledge of Adobe Photoshop, and a very bright future in Illustrator. Not even having gone to school yet, one of my teachers (from photography) was able to offer me a job, to work in the busiest Sign Shop in town, as a graphic designer. The owner of the business was excited that I'd had so much experience and was impressed by my portfolio. And He showed me everything else I needed to know. Now I'm getting ready for post-secondary and its hard to find a school or course that offers more than what I've already learned from high school, the internet and classroom-in-a-book.

So, that's my advice, and GOOD LUCK!

What are Your Options with Graphic Design Careers?

Chances are if you're reading this, you're either seeking information on graphic design careers simply out of interest or you're in the midst of your school program and aren't sure where to start once you graduate. Either way, it's okay to wonder what types of jobs are open to graphic designers because the field isn't exactly one of the most popular. Before getting into careers, you might be interested in a basic rundown on graphic design. A person that will work in the graphic design field generally designs all types of work that companies use for their advertising or promoting of their message, such as logos, advertisements, magazine covers, product packaging and so much more. Generally, a graphic designer has to complete either a 2-year or 4-year degree at an accredited college to officially graduate and become a graphic designer. Some of the course subjects required at most schools before a graphic designer can graduate include typography, web design, photography, basic drawing, digital media, and so much more. Once a graphic designer graduates, he/she can expect to enter the workforce making roughly around $21k and moving up to $39k after becoming experienced. However, what happens once a student studying graphic design graduates? What types of career options does he/she have? The truth is that there are tons of options to the designer who is unemployed. The designer can first begin searching local listings or job openings for graphic design jobs. Some companies may look for a graphic designer to hire indefinitely, meaning a constant paycheck would be likely. When looking through ads or want listings, a graphic designer searches for terms such as logo design, web design, or something similar to what they learned in school. Even if a graphic designer can't find work locally by searching for it, he/she can always try taking the freelance route to generate income. Freelancing is a bit different than being hired in as a graphic designer to a company. When a graphic designer freelances, he/she can offer services to companies on a per job basis. The company wouldn't technically hire the designer into the company. He/she would outsource his/her work to that company. There are lots of graphic design career options for designers out in the world, and it's definitely not a dry or dying industry. If art is your passion, graphic design could be your most profitable option for work!
