Acid rain (more correctly acidic precipitation) refers to the rain or snow wih a pH lower than 7.

"Clean" or unpolluted rain has a slightly acidic pH of about 5.2, because carbon dioxide and water in the air react together to form carbonic acid, a weak acid (pH 5.6 in distilled water), but unpolluted rain also contains other chemicals. H2O (l) + CO2 (g) → H2CO3 (aq) Carbonic acid then can ionize in water forming low concentrations of hydronium ions: 2H2O (l) + H2CO3 (aq) CO32- (aq) + 2H3O+(aq) The extra acidity in rain comes from the reaction of primary air pollutants, primarily sulphur oxides and nitrogen oxides, with water in the air to form strong acids (like sulphuric and nitric acid). The main sources of these pollutants are industrial power-generating plants and vehicles.

The chemistry:

Sulphur dioxide and water form sulphurous acid (H2SO3)

SO2(g) + H2O(l) <--> H2SO3(aq)

In some cases sulphur dioxide (SO2) oxidizes to sulphur trioxide (SO3)

2SO2(g) + O2(g) -> 2SO3(g)

The sulphur trioxide (SO3) then combines with water making sulphuric acid (H2SO4)

SO3(g) + H2O(l) -> H2SO4(aq)

Some oxides of nitrogen like nitrogen dioxide (NO2) react with water to form nitrous acid (HNO2) and nitric acid (HNO3)

2NO2(g) + H2O(l) -> HNO2(aq) + HNO3(aq)

The compound that causes acid rain is...

carbon!

This is part of my science homework!

Answer:

Acid rain started to become a problem in the industrial age.

We burned off loads and loads of coal (of which is mainly carbon)

The problem is that it also contain sulfur.

The smoke generated contains some sulfur in one form or another.

When the sulfur in the smoke gets up in the atmosphere, it will react with moisture present and form sulfuric acid.

Sulfuric acid is the main problem of acid rain. Other compounds may be formed of which also adds to the acidity of the rain falling down.

Burning pure carbon alone does not make acid rain later.

What substances does rain mix with to become acidic?

"Acid rain is caused by a chemical reaction that begins when compounds like sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides are released into the air. These substances can rise very high into the atmosphere, where they mix and react with water, oxygen, and other chemicals to form more acidic pollutants, known as acid rain."

What acids are made from SO2 and NOx?

In solution, sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides form sulfuric acid and nitric acid, respectively. These acids are found in acid rain, where the gaseous compounds become dissolved in falling rain.

Is rain and acid a rock chemical?

An acid rain contain acids as HNO3, H2SO4, HCl.

Does nitrogen compounds cause acid rain?

Yes, along with sulfur compounds.

What are some suggestions for what you can do to prevent acid rain and the damage it causes?

Acid rain is generally formed when sulphur dioxide combines with water in the atmosphere to form sulphuric acid or when nitrogen dioxide combines with water in the atmosphere to form nitric acid. Reducing the amounts of sulphur in gasoline or reducing the likelihood of vehicles creating nitrogen compounds reduces the amount of acid rain.

How does acid rain fall?

When sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides gases react in the atmosphere with water, oxygen, and other chemicals to form various acids compounds, acid rain occurs. The result is a mild solution of sulfuric acid and nitric acid.
