What supplies do you need to run 240V for a hot tub?In: Home Electricity |
[Edit] |
Answer
This is a pretty dangerous area for the "do it your self home improvement." There are National Electric Code rules for have GFI (ground fault inturption) circuit breakers and other safety precautions that apply here. You could have some real safety and liability issues on your hands if it isn't wired to local code. If you do try it yourself, maybe the neighbors dog would be a good canditate for the maiden plunge!
Answer
(1) 2-pole GFI breaker for the proper amperage (probably 50A). This will be expensive!
(2) 4 conductor + bare ground wire at the proper gauge for your amperage. There will be 2 hot wires, 1 neutral wire, 1 "bonding wire" or "frame ground" and 1 bare ground wire. Some jurisdictions don't require the bonding wire; contact your electrical inspector. If the circuit goes outside of the house, you may need to get wire that is rated for "wet" or "outdoor" conditions. Installation in conduit may require a higher temperature rating wire also. Contact your inspector.
(3) Some jurisdictions require a "manual disconnect" which is like a big switch in addition to the GFI breaker. Talk to your local electrical inspector.
(4) Weatherproof boxes and conduit for any wiring that goes outside or underground. This also varies by jurisdiction.
There are really a lot of variables with regard to wiring a hot-tub, and a lot of potentially dangerous opportunities for NEC violations. You should probably have an electrician do the work.
