Hermit crabs and snails both have shells affixed to their bodies, which protect their soft bodies from damage from the elements and predators. These are necessary, since they are slow, and rarely can outrun a predator. Both animals can tuck their bodies inside the shell to further protect themselves

Almost none. Hermit crabs are mollusks and snails are gastropods. Totally different creatures. But hermit crabs use the discarded shells of snails to cover their soft abdomens. One snail's trash is a hermit crab's treasure. :-)

Hermit crabs use sea snails shells for their "home". The snails die and their shells wash up on the shore and hermit crabs use them. So hermit crabs depend on sea snails.
