The koi tattoo with flowers or maple leaves have different meaning. The flowers (usually cherry blossoms) represent the journey and challenges of life.

If the koi tattoo has maple leaves it has a different meaning. It is the story of how the koi fish travels its life upstream (in Japan its during the fall, hence maple leaves) and makes it to the rainbow gate and leaps from the water and upon doing so is rewarded by being turned into a dragon.

you can combine any of those symbols in the same area it all depends on whether you want them to be interpreted in a traditional or conventional manner. the hanya mask, if you have done any research , is a woman whose unrequited love and jealousy of a priest turned herself into a monster. the koi means many things depending on placement, color, direction, and surroundings. both of those are of an Asian background which i am familiar with. as for the phoenix, i believe it to be a symbol of greek mythology. me personally, i would not combine them in the same tattoo but i have traditional Japanese tattoos that have traditional meanings. with most getting tattoos for a certain look nowadays it is totally up to the individual what is combined with what in your own tattoo.

Go with the one that has the most meaning to you, a tattoo is very personal, and only you need to know why you got it. :)

Flowers to go with koi tattoo?

Any popular Japanese or water flowers. Cherry blossoms are probably the most popular to go with koi tattoos. Lotus flowers are also popular. although to expand on this answer koi fish normally swim upstream in the fall/winter and those seasons are represented by maple leaves and Chrysanthemums, cherry blossoms and peonies represent spring and summer which is often protrayed with a dragon

Is there any reason why you can't mix the maple leave and the cherry blossom on a tattoo?

Maple leaves are associated with Canada and the cherry blossom is associated with Japan. So, if you are a Japanese Canadian, this may make sense, but there are probably better representations of your culture available. A tattoo is a very personal thing. If you want to combine symbols that mean something important to you, there is nothing stopping you. I do recommend you work with the artist to get an esthetic pleasing design. First off, in Japanese tatto the maple would be that of a Japanese Maple Tree. The reason you dont usually mix the two in one tattoo is because they serve different purposes. They relate to the different seasons. The japanese maple leaf is more often associated with the fall/winter and the koi fish travels up stream in the fall. It would make sense to have maples leaves with a koi fish tattoo. The cherry blossom is most often associated spring summer and are often incorporated into dragon tattoo pieces.

What goes better with a koi fish tattoo cherry blossems maple leaves lotus flowers?

Lotus flowers can be associated with them and look good as well, but cherry blossoms coupled with waves and perhaps some other Koi or smaller Asian marine life ties in well and perhaps overlay a well done, brush stroked Kanji character are typically the standard. Additionally, you never want to get the Koi headed downwards on your body, always upward swimming against the stream.
