No. It is purely a visual phenomenon.
It started in 1969 when BBC decided to make a program called Pot Black and put it on television. It was helped considerably by Alex Higgins winning the world championship in 1972. He was a controversial but attacking and flamboyant crowd pleaser. The move of the World Championship to the crucible theater in Sheffield England in 1977 and its sponsorship by Imperial Tobacco (Embassy) since 1976 have all helped. The decision by the BBC to extensively televise snooker and then other TV stations following suite have all contributed. The money offered by tobacco sponsorship helped attract a number of players to the game along with TV exposure.
I remember that program too! But cant for the life of me remember the name and want to find out!! Did you find out?
