The first theatre in London was called the Theatre. It was built for James Burbage in 1576. By 1594 there were two more houses, the Curtain and the Rose. A company, the Lord Chamberlain´s company (renamed in 1603, becoming the King´s players) including Shakespeare and the Burbages built the Globe theater in 1599. There also was the Blackfriars theater. (Those theatres were usually visited by members of the third estate, special plays were played for Queen Elizabeth I and her court at her court.)

There were many more than two theatres in Elizabethan and Jacobean London. The Theatre was built in 1576 and closed in 1595. The Curtain was built in 1577 and Newington Butts in 1576. There were a number of innyards (the Bel Savage, Bell, Bull and Cross Keys) used as theatres until 1594. The Rose was built in 1587, but it was somewhat unpopular due to its being built in a marsh and next to a brothel. It was also smaller than some of the others, and declined in use when The Admiral's Men moved to The Fortune (which was built in 1600, and was the largest and most spectacular of the outdoor theatres. It was also remarkable for being rectangular rather than round.). The Swan was built in 1595, but its credit was damaged when it was the venue for the scandalous play Isle of Dogs, and destroyed when it was the host of the fraudulent spectacular England's Joy in 1602. Thereafter it only saw sporadic use. The Globe was built in 1599 by members of The Lord Chamberlain's Men including Shakespeare, burned and was rebuilt in 1614 and survived until 1642. The Red Bull was built in 1604 and although it started out as a venue for top-level plays, it eventually became a low-brow establishment, although it survived the Commonwealth and burned down in 1666. The Hope was built in 1614 to the same plans as the Swan; its alternate name of The Bear Garden suggests that it was used more for bearbaiting than theatre.

These were outdoor theatres, but there were also indoor theatres: St. Paul's (1576), The Blackfriars (1576, then closed; reopened in 1596 when it was host to a boys' company; sold in 1608 to a group of investors from the King's Men including Shakespeare) and The Cockpit, operated by Christopher Beeston, a former associate of Shakespeare, which opened just after Shakespeare's death.

The first playhouse was called The Theatre, and it was north of London. The Rose, on the south bank of the Thames, and Newington Butts, further south, were built shortly after. The Curtain was a little to the south of The Theatre. The Swan, built 1595, was one of the finest theatres on the south bank of the Thames in the area called Southwark, although it never seemed to have any luck. After The Theatre was torn down and its timbers used to build The Globe, also in Southwark, Philip Henslowe and Ned Alleyn had the same builder, Peter Street build The Fortune northwest of the city. The Fortune was the largest and finest theatre in London, and the only square one, the others being round. The Red Bull, built to the northeast of London, and the Hope or Bear Garden in Southwark were the last to be built before Shakespeare's retirement. There was also the Blackfriars theatre, at one time used by the boys' acting companies and later by The King's Men; it was on the west side of London and was an indoor theatre.

All theatres named after Shakespeare are, of course, called The Shakespeare Theatre. If they were called anything else, they wouldn't have been named after him.

How many theatres were in London during Shakespeare's time?

Theatres were constantly being built and being destroyed so the number changed from time to time. The Theatre was closed in 1596 and taken down in 1599 when its parts were used to build The Globe in a different part of London. The Rose was an older and smaller theatre which had been partly expanded. The Admiral's Men, who played there, built the much larger Fortune theatre and moved, which led to the decline of the Rose and its eventual demolition. The Globe burned down in 1613 and was not rebuilt until the next year. Some of the theatres which were around in Shakespeare's time were The Theatre, The Curtain, The Rose, The Swan, The Globe, The Fortune, The Hope (or bear garden), Newington Butts, the Blackfriars (there were actually two theatres by this name at different times), and St. Paul's. There were also a number of innyards used regularly for plays (4 or 5 that we know the names of).
