Water is a polar molecule. This is because the oxygen atom is slightly electronegative and the hydrogen atoms electropositive. When dissolution of ionic compounds occurs, for example of salt (sodium chloride), the positive hydrogen atoms in the water molecule are attracted to the negative ion, chlorine, and so, in a simplified sense, surround it and overcome the positive force of the sodium. This leaves a free chlorine ion free to move in the water. The same happens to the sodium, but it is positively charged and so surrounded by the negatively charged oxygen in the water molecule.

When covalent compounds, such as carbon dioxide dissolve, they usually form a new compound with the water, such as carbonic acid in the case of carbon dioxide.
