Nobody knows the exact date that it started, but it was about two thousand years ago when Jesus died and then rose again three days later. By putting your trust in Jesus and asking him to take the pentalty for your sins and make you clean, you can become a Christian and have eternal life. That's what its all about.

Since the term Christianity is not in the bible and never was uttered by Jesus, you really have to wait till the First Council of Nicaea where the ruling pope of England decided that he was tired of many different religions teaching many different rules/regs/ideas.

So he brought them all together and told them that they needed to work out a single platform for everyone to follow. Some scriptures were allowed, some not, some were destroyed such as the Gospel by Mary and the Gospel by Thomas. Why? It would have not allowed the european church to continue to control people by fear.

The first council of Nicaea was in 325 AD, centuries after Jesus rose from the dead. Therefore any assumed connection between Jesus/God/Christianity is merely in the minds of mankind and nowhere else.

So for any man made religion to claim a direct connection to God or Jesus through 'their named religion' is purely myth. In fact God did not like or want any man made religion. He spoke to Amos the prophet and told him this:

"I hate all your show and pretense - the hypocrisy of your religious festivals and solemn assemblies. I will not accept your burnt offerings and grain offerings. I won't even notice all your choice peace offerings. Away with your hymns of praise! I will not listen to the music of your harps. Instead, I want to see a mighty flood of justice, an endless river of righteous living."

This is Gods words, please remember that. And He says he wants nothing to do with man's 'man-made' religions, including the Jewish faith! He just wants us to live a 'Just and Righteous' life.

Now you can go against Gods words but I'd hesitate to do such.

That depends largely on your definition of Christianity, but typically all Christians agree that the death of Christ is an important aspect of the modern religion, and his death occured in the vicinity of 0AD.

It is worth noting that Christianity is in fact an expansion of Judaism. According to Judaism, Adam spoke routinely with God, which would make him a prophet, thus by Christian beliefs, Christianity can be considered to be as old as man.

Jesus was crucified on a Friday, and was resurrected on the third day. He was dead on part of Friday, all of Saturday and part of Sunday. It is believed that the calender we live by today started the year 1 A.D. when Jesus was about 3. That is around the time Jesus and Mary and Joseph came back from Egypt where they fled after Christ was born in Bethlehem. A.D. stands for Anno Domini, which is Latin for the year of the Lord. It is believed that Christ was crucified and resurrected approximately the year 29 A.D.
