During the shortest days of the year (December through January) the sun doesn't rise until around 7:00 a.m., and by 5:30 p.m. it is pitch dark.

In contrast, during the longest days of the year (June through July) the sun rises at around 5:00 a.m., and doesn't set until around 9:00 to 9:30 p.m.
