What time periods are there in water polo? In: Water Polo |
[Edit] |
A game of water polo is usually divided into quarters, at junior levels the game may be played in two halves. If quarters are played the time periods may vary, usually between 5 and 15 minutes.
More professional organisations and large tournaments will usually have a set time for each quarter so all teams are on a level playing field, so to speak.
The actual length of the periods will often relate to the age of the players or their ability with international games or national league games being much longer than amateur matches or "mini polo" for children. The FINA, who are the international governing body, say in their 2005-2009 rules, that four quarters of 8 minutes each should be played. If the scores are level after all four quarters, extra time of two three minute periods is played.
