If the tick has parts of its body burrowed under the skin, the best way to remove it would be to carefully hold a lit match up to the site of the tick. Most likely it will remove itself, for ticks are very sensitive to heat.

The answer above is incorrect. Irritating the tick is not beneficial. Simply pull the tick off. Ticks actually "glue" themselves onto you. A gentle tug will work.

Irritating a tick will only makes it regurgitate its body fluid (which is where the disease is). And don't be so worried about not getting the head off. The worse scenario is that a local infection will develop. The actual disease (ie Rocky Mt spotted fever or Lyme disease) is in the fluid in the body.

It's best to leave it in place until it gets big and fat like a grape. Then squeeze the grape gently and it will let go. Don't worry, it won't pop; squeeze harder if it won't let go.

The longer you leave a tick in you, the higher your risk of disease. Don't pick the tick up by the body and squeeze, that will force the bacteria-laden body fluids into your skin. Ick! Either use tick removers or find a way to lift the tick off at the head. Don't worry about trying to get the head out, after a while, the tick glues itself in to your body.

If a tick has gotten completely under the skin, it is best to consult a doctor. In most cases, a tick can just be removed with tweezers, provided it is still above the surface. Howver, since ticks can carry certain diseases, it is still a good idea to schedule a doctor's visit.

How do you know if the head of a tick is still under your skin?

It is important to look at the tick when you remove it to see that you got the head as well as the body. If not, the head needs to be removed from under the skin. It will likely puff up and turn red to signify a foreign body is under the skin.

What if you leave some of the tick inside a cat?

First of all . . . never pull on a tick that is attached to an animal's skin. It can break off and leave the tick's head under the skin. If that happens, then there is a high risk of infection. A veterinarian should removed the remainder of the tick, and apply and antibiotic. He/She may decide to put the cat on a course of antibiotic tablets.

Can a tick burrow under a humans skin?

Yes, they do, I had one today. I could only tell because, when I moved the skin just right, I could see something black in the ultra tiny hole. The area around the hole also looked dark (maybe the tick or blood) and was sore. A tick will go in only as far as its mouth-parts are long. That is, it doesn't go in very far. If you pull the tick off and see black, that is mouth-parts left in your skin.
