There are several things you can do about heartworms in pets. First, you can keep your pet on a monthly heartworm preventative, which is over 99% effective at preventing heartworm infestations in dogs and cats. Second, you can help reduce your pet's risk of getting infested with heartworms by avoiding peak times for mosquitoes, which is dawn and dusk around standing pools of water. Third, if your dog is infested with heartworms, there is an effective cure for them. It is risky for the dog - some dogs die of complications of heartworm treatment - but it will eliminate the heartworm infestation in your dog. There is no effective treatment for cats because they are so sensitive to the adult worms that they typically die of the infestation before treatment can be started; the good news is cats are quite resistent naturally to heartworm infestation in the first place.

HeartWorms is a nasty parasitic worm that enjoys part of the heart as its feeding-ground. One need some sort of "insect poison" to kill it off.

Long term treatment with "Ivermectin" can do the trick, but it is generally concidered as a pre-emptive medicine that helps your dog not get the disease to start with.

Large dosis of Ivermectine can possibly do this killing faster, but as soon as the dose is high enough to penetrate the BloodBrain barrier, your pet will be at severe risk.

If your dog is throwing up blood, then that is not neseccarily due to the heartworms. Could be a totally different cause of that.

The safest thing to do for your pet is to have a well qualified vet to have a thorough examination on it. It may cost a bit, but your dog will probably live with no adverse sideeffects to any treatment given.

Following from Wikipedia:

Before the worms can be treated, however, the dog must be evaluated for heart, liver, and kidney function to evaluate the risks of treatment. Usually the adult worms are killed with an arsenic-based compound. The currently approved drug in the US, melarsomine dihydrochloride, is marketed under the brand name Immiticide.[12] It has a greater efficiency and fewer side effects than previously used drug (thiacetarsamide sodium, sold as Caparsolate) which makes it a safer alternative for dogs with late-stage infections.

Ivermectin is used a preventative; Immiticide is for dogs already infested and is expensive, but it is off the market indefinitely.

Heart worms are treated by a serious of very toxic, arsenic-based injections that will act to kill the adult heartworms. It takes several injections spaced apart, and the dog must be on kennel-rest during this time. THIS IS VERY RISKY!!! Many dogs do DIE from the treatment for heartworm. The dead worms can dislodge from the heart and block pulmonary arteries or form a thrombus (blood clot). Therefore, it is important that you provide your dog with PREVENTATIVE and annual heartworm testing to ensure he is safe. Ask your veterinarian about Heartgard, Interceptor, and the many other newer, topical preventative products. Plus, a lot of these medications also help to treat and prevent intestinal parasites!

Treatment for heartworms involves either giving the dog with a drug that kills the adult worms in the heart over a course of injections and time and then treating the immature forms that are circulating in the blood or simply treating the immature forms in the blood to prevent the dog serving as a reservoir to infect other animals and simply allowing the adults to die over time. This second method carries the risk of the worms doing significant damage to the heart in the added time that it takes them to die off naturally, thus leading to increased risk of congestive heart failure.

Heartworm is a parasitic nematode worm that infests the hearts of dogs and other animals. To prevent heartworm, we can try medicines like ivermectin. Ivermectin is an effective treatment against heartworm, and it cures animals of heartworm and makes them free from that disease. Also, ivermectin does not have any side effects, so we don't need to panic about using Ivermectin tablets to treat animals from heartworm. Ivermectin is an anti-parasitic medication used to treat all types of infection and prevent heartworm.

Can your dog get heart worms from other dogs?

Yes, but in a round about way. The way your dog might get heart worms from another dog is if the dog with heart worms is bitten by a mosquito which then bites your dog. The virus is spread by mosquitoes and not the dog itself. The article link below has more info on heart worms in dogs.
