What to do in sacramento? |
check out a film at the crest theater or tower theater. both play interesting indie/cultural flicks hard to find elsewhere and both have a really cool ambiance.
the crest is a glitzy 40s theater which has spent it's million dollar donation on keeping the history looking awesome -- http://www.thecrest.com/
the tower theater opened in 1938 and is associated with the international chain (now pretty much deceased) tower records.http://www.thetowertheatre.com/tower/default.asp
I've always loved wandering around old town Sacramento, the wooden sidewalks elevated to quell the river born diseases, the saloon-style buildings, the back door bar is a great hole in the wall jazz club with decently priced drinks and a chicago-esque dark red interior. the laughs unlimited comedy club does totally worth it shows on the weekends and (I think) every Wednesday.
the river is the heart of the place and you haven't been there if you haven't had a beer or two floating down it- check out the rainbow bridge which crosses over into folsom and you'll see tons of locals swimming or stupidly jumping off the thing and a lot of neat history in the area to boot. across the bridge wander through the antique stores on old sutter street and then have a beer at the powerhouse pub- awesome blues and rock shows have been going on there since the mid 70s. http://www.powerhousepub.com/about_us.htm
the state fair is on in the summer and worth a day of horribly cheesy/overpriced fun.
...and probably tons more but these are some of my favourites when I get to visit home...
