There are many factors to consider - for example:-

What is it primary function going to be (business, gaming etc)

What size screen do you need

What processor speed (eg are you using it for complex maths)

How much RAM you need

How big does the hard-drive need to be

Do you need a specific CD-ROM drive (blu-ray etc)

Does it need to have Wi-Fi

How many expansion ports (USB etc)

Above all how much money can you afford to spend on a new machine. The best way is to set yourself a budget - and see what machine you can get for the money you have available.

GOOD QUESTION.

office depot (for example) will often skip over specifics

1. the CPU (also known as the processor)

dual-core or more is often not present on a laptop. it is much better

if the laptop has a CPU less than 2.0 ghz, it can't do much but web browsing and microsoft office smoothly

a fast laptop CPU will run around 2.5-2.9 ghz at its base

INTEL CPUs:

the i3: doesn't come with overclocking (usually called turbo boost or something)

the i5: often comes with overclocking

the i7: always comes with overclocking

1.5 overclocking

it temporarily can the CPU from (for example) 2.4 ghz to 3.2ghz TEMPORARILY

it is better, but not perfect for gaming (ups and downs in performance)

it is very good for everyday stuff (like iTunes, internet, etc)

only factory overclocking

2. the weight

ask

3. THE RAM

you don't need more than 4 gb

THE SERIES OF THE RAM IS MUCH MORE IMPORTANT.

DDR3 is the newest series; its much faster than DDR2

4. the HARD DRIVE

if you're a casual gamer, you can get away with as little as 300 GB

Hard drives (HDD) is typical for a laptop. it's much cheaper than a SDD (solid-state drive)

SSDs are much more expensive, but WAY faster

SPEED:

most HDDs are 5400 rpm. this is the most basic speed you can get.

the higher the rpm, the faster the transfer speed (for things like opening files, copy and pasting files, playing music, and computer start-up

5. the GRAPHICS CARD

  • also called the GPU or video card
  • a faster graphics card means smoother and higher quality gaming experience
  • dedicated vs. integrated
  • dedicated (also called discreet):
  • faster
  • uses more power
  • more expensive
  • integrated
  • usually slower
  • much more cooling required
  • can have shared memory with CPU
  • ASK ABOUT THE FIGURES
  • an xbox has about 850 mhz speed.
  • a notebook has about 100 mhz speed

NO. 1 RULE: DON'T LET THEM BS YOU ON LITTLE STUFF YOU CAN DO

ex of bs:

  • telling you little ways to make your computer faster
  • like defragging
  • like changing your scheme
  • telling you what little programs it comes with
  • like bulletin board program things
  • like hp games

basically:

graphics card: 400 mhz (more if you do more)

cpu: 2.4 ghz (more if you want more)

HDD: up to 500 gb, 7000 rpm and up is fast

ram: up to 4 gb, DDR3, not DDR2

and a touch pad that will work well when your hand is sweaty

island-style keyboard

DON'T SETTLE FOR OPINIONS

If you are buying a used laptop you will want to power on the laptop to make sure it is in good working condition and that it isn't password protected to log on. If buying new you should check to make sure it comes with everything needed to power on and that you know how to properly use it. If you are new to computers you might want to start out with the most basic model until you get the hang of how they work and then upgrade to a better model.

When a person is looking to buy a new laptop computer, there are several features that need to be considered before the final purchase is made. With many different types of laptops on the market, it can be difficult deciding on only one to buy. The most common features to look for in a laptop computer are screen size, the amount of memory, hard drive size, battery life and processor speed. Each of these features is a big part of what makes a laptop worth buying and each one is equally important for potential buyers.

The first thing to consider when looking to buy a laptop is the screen size. The three most common screen sizes are 11.1 inches, 15 inches and 17 inches. For users that are always traveling and need a laptop that is capable of Surfing the web and creating text documents, then the 11.1 inch screen may be the best choice. For users that do light traveling and primarily use their laptop on the couch, then the 15 inch screen will be good for watching videos and surfing the web. Laptops that have a 17 inch screen usually are for gamers and are far more expensive.

The next thing that a person should look at when buying a laptop is the amount of RAM it has. A typical laptop will have between 2Gb and 4GB of memory. The amount of RAM will basically determine the number of programs that can be open at any one time. Without a sufficient amount of memory, a laptop will not be able to function properly.

Another feature that people need to consider when buying a laptop computer is the battery life. Most laptops will have a battery life of two to three hours, while the more expensive models can have a battery that lasts up to six hours. Battery life is most important for people that rely on their computer while they are traveling. For people that are not going to take their computer out of the house, battery life is not important because it will stay plugged into a power source. Overall, there are a number of features that users should consider before buying a computer because many people regret their decision if they do not do the proper research.

When you are shopping for a new laptop, it is easy to get overwhelmed and confused by the many options available. Just like with shopping for any other type of computer, you need to know what type of operating system you prefer, what features are a must-have for your particular needs and so forth. With a laptop, you will also want to think about what size you prefer. For example, if you will only be using your laptop at home, the size may not be an issue to you because you don't plan to take it places and have to carry it around much. If you are young, the color or other stylish appearance may play a role in what laptop you choose to buy. If you know that you will be taking your laptop with you everywhere you go, you will want to think in terms of lightweight portability and a hassle-free system as far as opening and closing the laptop goes. Think about whether or not you need a webcam, how much memory you will need and what programs are absolutely essential in accomplishing your goals. Some laptops and other computers come with certain software readily available on them.

While it is a wise idea to go into brick and mortar stores to get a hands-on feel for the look, style, appearance and ease of use for your laptop, ultimately you will probably want to shop online for the purchase. When you shop online, you have a great chance to find unbeatable discounts, you may have greater room for negotiation with the seller or the online store that you are purchasing from and you will be able to choose from a huge variety of computers, versus being limited only to what you can find in your local stores. Remember that when you are looking at the price of a laptop online, that often times sellers do not mention shipping costs until the very end of the cashing out process. For this reason, it is always best to research the shipping price combined with the cost of the laptop before deciding that this is the one you are going to buy.

Before running out and purchasing a laptop, there are a few steps you should take. Doing comparison shopping at your local electronics store and on various websites will help you find the best price available on a particular laptop. You should also check out the specifications for each laptop you want to buy. Compare memory, hardware, software and other features so you can get a better idea of which laptop best fits your needs.

One of the factors to consider in comparing laptops would be price. Another factor to consider would be their functions such as imaging, video, and internet connection.
