I just changed the oil in a 2002 Passat and i only needed a metric socket set, a Phillips screwdriver, and an oil filter wrench.

There's suppose to be a splash cover over the oil pan, but the Passat i changed didn't have one on it. The oil pan is directly underneath the engine compartment, not under the firewall/floorpan area. If you notice, the dipstick goes straight down into the oil pan. The drain plug was on the passenger side of the engine/oil pan. The oil pan drain plug will be a hex-head bolt. The transmission drain plug is an Allen-head bolt. Be sure you have the right one. If you drain the Transmission Fluid by accident you will not be able to refill it, it is a sealed system.

1. Loosen, and/or remove the oil filler cap on top of the engine, and also pull the dipstick out of its seat and just let it rest on the tube, without being seated in the tube. This allows the oil to drain more freely/quickly from the pan once the drain plug has been removed.

2. Remove the Drain plug using a 19mm socket and ratchet.

3. While the oil is draining, return to the top, drivers-side, of the engine compartment and locate the coolant expansion tank. It will be mounted close to the firewall and will require the Phillips-head screwdriver to remove the mounting screws.

4. Loosen the expansion tank, but do not remove the attached hoses. There will be an electrical harness plugged into the bottom of the tank, unplug it. Take a piece of wire/string and tie the tank toward the front of the car so it's out of your way to get at the oil filter, (it's underneath the tank on the drivers-side of the engine). Do not pull on the tank too hard or you could damage the hoses still connected to it.

5. Check to see if most of the oil is drained out of the oil pan, by now it should be. Using an oil filter wrench (if needed) loosen the attached oil filter. Carefully remove it, keeping the filter as upright as possible the whole time to avoid spilling the oil in it. (Drain the oil into a container for recycling before discarding the used filter) Be sure to compare the old filter to the new one for any differences.

6.Wipe off the old oil around the oil filter mounting area with a clean, lint-free, rag. Be careful to not get any dirt into the oil filter mounting area. Put a dab of the new Synthetic Oil, you are going to install, on your finger tip, and wipe it around the rubber gasket surface of the new oil filter. Install the new filter. Tighten 3/4 of a turn from the time the gasket contacts the filter mounting surface. Do not overtighten!

7. When all of the oil is drained from the pan, reinstall, and tighten, the drain plug. Add 4 quarts of oil in the engine. Tighten the oil filler cap, and re-seat the dipstick into the tube. Reconnect the electrical harness to the expansion tank, and re-install it. Be sure of all your connections, and remove all tools used from the engine compartment area. Start the engine for about 20 seconds. Turn off the engine, and let it set for 5-10 minutes. Re-check oil level and add more as necessary. Do not overfill! A 2002 Passat with the new high-capacity oil filter should hold 4.2 quarts.

If you remove the plastic splash shield from the underside of the car you will see a large silver square roughly centered under the engine bay. The oil drain plug sticks out to the side and faces the drivers side of the car.
