The first tool to buy would be educational material such as an overhaul repair manual like Chilton's or similar. Basic tools would include a complete set of combination wrenches, screwdrivers, and sockets, but the small stuff would fill a long list. Tach/dwell meter, vacuum gage, timing light, multimeter, etc. Just to name a few.
At the engine oil filler cap. On a 350 GM engine it is located on one of the valve covers, and is easily found. If you cannot find this cap, then you have no business working on this engine.
