If it's a 1/2 ton then it will be a 700R4. 3/4 ton will have a 4L60E.
it should be the 700r4 4 speed auto no 4l60 or 4l80
The 1997 Chevrolet Suburban 2500 has a 4L80-E 4-speed automatic transmission. It was are only used in Chevrolet and GMC vehicles.
Call your local GM dealer with the seventeen digit vin number and they will be able to tell you. NEW ANSWER: Yours has a 4L60E in it. The 1/2 tons used the 4L60E and the 3/4 tons and up used the 4L80E. They quit using the 700R4 around 1991 ( I think ) The 4L60E and the 4L80E will not interchange due to the wiring harness and ECM / computer.
Most of these had the 4L60 (700R4 updated) Some had the 4L80 (overdrive lock up variant of the old 400) if the diesel, Big block or towing or off road option packages were included
4L80
Yes, but be prepared to cut the entire transmission hump section out of the floor for serious modification. The 4L80-E is a much larger transmission than will fit without bigtime mods. You'll also need a computer to control the shifting. If you want a 4 speed automatic, a 200R4 or 700R4 are much more practical, easier and cheaper to swap in, and don't require a computer and related sensors and wiring.
If both vehicles have the same motor it should match up. You may have to order or make an adapter for the wiring.
Most common were 4l60 & 4l80

You need to find out what transmission model you have - either it's a 4L60 (most likely) or a 4L80. 1992 was the last year they used mechanical transmissions - anything newer than 1992 will have the electronically controlled 4L60E. You would want either a 700R4 transmission from 1984 - 1989 or a 4L60 (essentially the same transmission) from 1990 - 1992.
Like the Small block the big block has the same size transmission pattern. So with that you can install 2 speed power glide up to the 4L80E. It depends on what your plan is to use the motor for and pick your transmission. 2 SpeedPower Glide 350 400 700R4 (4AL60-4L65) 4L80-4L80E 200R4 Pick away!
