A thermohaline current may be generated in Arctic and Antarctic regions. When sea water freezes, the salt is excluded from the new ice, thus enriching the adjacent sea water with more salt. This enriched sea water is therefore more dense. It is naturally cold because of where it is produced, and flows as a dense cold stream within the main body of the ocean. It is an important driver of world wide oceanic circulation.

Hence the two part name Thermo and Haline.
