Jeff Lynne wears aviator type sunglasses. He started wearing them on a regular basis in after 1978. He was/is extremely shy and it gave him a little feeling of privacy while onstage and in public. Jeff Lynne actually didn't wear the sunglasses in the early days.

Although the official name for these sunglasses in the past were called Flight Google 58 the glasses are currently recognized as Aviator Sunglasses and due to persons involved in notable and famous events these sunglasses are displayed at the Smithsonian Institute. The answer is Aviator Sunglasses. I would assume that all the actors portraying Naval Aviators and those that were actually flying the jets while filming took place in San Diego, California would have been sporting these same sunglasses.
