Would school nurses change diapers in grade school?

Not normally. If your child needs diapers at school and cannot change himself, you will normally have to have special help worked out with the school under the American Disabilities act. You and the School will work out having a special education type worker assigned to do this task. However, it normally isn't the nurse who dose it.

How to Select the Right School for Your Special Needs Children?

Choosing the right school for a child is a difficult enough task; it becomes even more complicated when the child in question has special needs. This is an important decision that will affect your child for at least thirteen years, so follow these steps to pick the best school for your child.1. Evaluate the extent of your child’s special needs and how much accommodation you think they will need. You can go one of two ways—a school specifically for students with special needs or a standard school with an integrated special education department. In some cases, children with extensive needs that are very limited in their academic potential do better at a school for special needs students. They have more specialists and are less likely to encounter a teacher who is inexperienced with special needs students. If your child has mild special needs and can function well with children without special needs, an integrated program could be the better choice.2. After you’ve limited your choices to either a special needs school or an integrated program, you can look at all the different options in your district. Look at the statistics for special needs children—what percentage of the school do they make up? How many students have the same needs as your child? How many teachers per student are available? How many student aides or paraprofessionals are available at each grade level?3. Make appointments to meet with the principal of each school, as well as the special education department head and any teachers that would be working with your student during their first year of school. It takes a bit of time to talk to everyone, but they will all be directly involved in the writing and execution of your child’s Individual Education Plan. It’s important to make sure that you are working with professionals who understand your goals for your child and are willing to work with you.4. After you’ve taken all of these matters into consideration, you need to follow your instincts and choose the school that will help your child excel and make them happy. The last step is the most important—if you choose a school with uncooperative teachers, you will end up fighting a long, uphill battle. Make allies of those who are at your child’s school and your child will have a great chance at success.

Where can I get information about college scholarships for people with special needs?

Your best bet is to check with the Down Syndrome support association in your area. Your child likely receives disability payments and is probably eligible for educational assistance as well. You will also want to choose a school that can accommodate your child. Many schools (post-high school) have special programs for students with Down Syndrome and other special needs. Special funding for post-high school education would be from private sources. You can read more here: www.nads.org/pages_new/teenadults_pages/post_hs.html

Depending on what grade your child is in, the school counselor would probably be the first answer. Going to the child's teacher would be another good option as they also have that information.

What are the pros and cons of special needs children being intergrated into regular classrooms?

The pros of special needs children being integrated into the classroom are that the children will learn the skills needed to socialize with those of special needs. The cons would be that the class could be disrupted and it would be hard to teach children of special needs at the same pace as regular children within the same environment.

What subjects do you need to look after special needs people?

You need the same qualifications as you would to look after children without special needs. The main thing you need for this type of work is a big heart, understanding, empathy, and patience. Experience is always a good thing to have, as some of these children's needs are very complex and need someone with a sound understanding of the need. If you undertake a basic childcare qualification, chances are you will have to do placements anyway. Usually one of these would be a special needs placement. If not, you can do voluntary work at a disability centre, or within an out of school setting.

What is considered abuse of people with special needs?

any kind of abuse such as physical, emotional, mental or just simply taking advantage of a person who doesn't have the knowledge, almost like getting someone drunk to have sex with you, because the person is not in their full senses,or anything offensive, gosh, it really depends on what way you look at it,but to me i would find horrible any little thing that is meant to bother, hurt the person with special needs, sometimes i wonder what if all those mean people had kids with special disabilities, how would they like it for me to be a big meanie to their child, and i hope you are not asking because you did something meanand people please don't make fun of people with mental disabilities, because the have feelings too!♥
