Define "older model". Up to the early 90s, they used R-12/CFC-12. Good luck trying to get that anymore. R414B is the recommended replacement for R12 systems.

If you are not licensed, it is illegal to sell you freon for private use. It is best to pay someone to take care of this task and then you will be more certain of having a working air conditioner.
