A:The fruit that Adam and Eve ate in the story of the Garden of Eden was the fruit of the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil. By eating from this tree, they became like gods (Genesis 3:22: "And the LORD God said, Behold, the man is become as one of us..."), but had also become aware of their mortality.

The only difference between them and God (or the gods) was that they must die. By eating of the Tree of Life, they would then also be immortal.

In Genesis 3:24, God drove out the man and placed at the entrance to the Garden of Eden, cherubim and a flaming sword to keep [block] the way of the Tree of Life. Adam and Eve were sent from the Garden and could not be allowed back for fear they would eat of the second tree.

It is not known what type of fruit was eaten in the garden since it is not specified. The modern assumption that it was an apple is imagination only.

Answer: by WisdomOfSolomIt was the "tree of the knowledge of good and evil". It is not a tree that is present in the world today, just like the "tree of life" is no longer present in the world today. Tree Of Knowledge Of Good And EvilGenesis 2:9 (KJV) And out of the ground made the LORD God to grow every tree that is pleasant to the sight, and good for food; the tree of life also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of knowledge of good and evil.

Genesis 2:17 (KJV) But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die. Tree Of LifeGenesis 3:22 (KJV) And the LORD God said, Behold, the man is become as one of us, to know good and evil: and now, lest he put forth his hand, and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live for ever:

Genesis 3:24 (KJV) So he drove out the man; and he placed at the east of the garden of Eden Cherubims, and a flaming sword which turned every way, to keep the way of the tree of life.

Revelation 2:7 (KJV) He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; To him that overcometh will I give to eat of the tree of life, which is in the midst of the paradise of God.

Revelation 22:2 (KJV) In the midst of the street of it, and on either side of the river, was there the tree of life, which bare twelve manner of fruits, andyielded her fruit every month: and the leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations.

Revelation 22:14 (KJV) Blessed are they that do his commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city. No mention in Quran on what Adam and Eve were commanded not to eat. They were commanded not to approach a tree in Garden of Eden.

Quran says (English meaning translation):"O Adam! dwell you and your wife in the Garden, and enjoy (its good things) as you wish: but don't approach this tree, or you run into harm and transgression." Then began Satan to whisper suggestions to them, bringing openly before their minds all their shame that was hidden from them (before): he said: "Your Lord only forbade you this tree, for not becoming angels or being alive for ever." And he swore to them both, that he was their sincere adviser. So by deceit he brought about their fall: when they tasted of the tree, their shame became manifest to them, and they began to sew together the leaves of the garden over their bodies. And their Lord called them: "Did I not forbid you that tree, and tell you that Satan was an avowed enemy to you?" They said: "Our Lord! We have wronged our own souls: If you (Allah) don't forgive us and don't bestow upon us your Mercy, we shall certainly be lost." (Allah) said: "Get both down with enmity between yourselves (mankind). On earth will be your dwelling-place and your means of livelihood,- for a time." He said: "Therein shall you live, and therein shall you die; but from it shall you be taken out (at last)."[Quran, chapter7 (Surat Al-A'raf), verse 19 to 25]

Answer

There is no definite answer as to what the "fruit" is for sure. It has been said by some early rabbis that it was

  • the fig, because the next verse mentions sewing together fig leaves to make loincloths;
  • grapes, which later cause trouble for Noah, not to mention many other vino lovers;
  • the citron, a lemonlike fruit which in Hebrew is etrog, a pun on ragag, "desire";
  • wheat, khitah in Hebrew and thus a pun on khet, "sin" - a stretch, considering wheat isn't a fruit and doesn't grow on trees; or
  • the carob, because in Hebrew its name puns on the word for "destruction."

Christians believe that it was the tree of knowledge and eternity.

Muslims have no information on the tree type as it was not mentioned in Quran, Muslims holy book that reflects real God words to prophet Muhammad through the angel Gabriel.

Quran says:

Meaning English translation:

{And "O Adam, dwell, you and your wife, in Paradise and eat from wherever you will but do not approach this tree, lest you be among the wrongdoers." (19) But Satan whispered to them to make apparent to them that which was concealed from them of their private parts. He said, "Your Lord did not forbid you this tree except that you become angels or become of the immortal." (20)} [Quran, chapter 7, verses 19-20]

Answer from Genesis:The Bible doesn't "name" the tree, but it's commonly called the "tree of the knowledge of good and evil" because of what Satan told Eve:

Genesis 3:5 - "For God knows that in the day you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil." [NKJV]

There were two forbidden trees in the Garden of Eden - the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil, and the Tree of Life. Adam and Eve were forbidden to eat of either. They ate the fruit of the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil, but not that of the Tree of Life. These were not ordinary fruit trees but mythical trees also known from the mythology of the ancient Near East and Greece.

Some scholars say that Genesis depicts Adam and Eve, in their innocent state, as being unaware that they must die one day, so eating of the Tree of Life was of no interest to them. They ate the fruit of the Tree of Knowledge and learnt to understand good and evil, including that they would one day die.

When they had eaten of the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil they became like gods (Genesis 3:22: "And the LORD God said, Behold, the man is become as one of us..."), except that they were still mortal. By eating of the Tree of Life, they would then also be immortal. In Genesis 3:24, God drove out the man and placed at the entrance of the Garden of Eden, cherubim and a flaming sword to keep [block] the way of the Tree of Life.
