The first large structures formed by tensile stress in the crust are Horst and Graben structures. If the tensile stress state is maintained, these may form into a rift valley and ultimately develop into a new mid oceanic spreading centre.
Tension in the Earth's crust causes normal faulting and can result in the formation of "horst and graben" structures. Graben are blocks of land that are bounded by opposing normal faults and so are down thrown.
Graben are usually bounded by horst structures which are on the footwall side of the normal fault and usually remain stationary (although may display slight uplift). Ultimately extension of the crust may result in the formation of a rift zone.
