I believe a bi-convex lens, that is, a lens with an outward curve on both surfaces, would provide the greatest magnification in a simple (single) lens system.
On a standard microscope, the highest objective power is 100x. Generally the ocular also has a 10x magnification, for a total magnification of 1000x.

So once an objective lens is selected, the total magnification would be given by its product with the 10x magnification of the ocular lens. For example, if objective lens selected is 40x, total magnification would be: (10x)(40x)=400x total.
