TVs, VCR and DVD are normally controlled through LED bulbs emitting infra red light. The different actions are encoded into different patterns of blinking. Some remotes have more than one LED, allowing for more complex signals.

The remote that came with my satellite system does two types of "ray", emission would be more correct.

It sends out low power Infrared beams and low power radio waves depending on what it is controlling.

Depends on age and usage. Most current multimedia remotes use infla-red light, you can often see the little LED in the front. Things like garage door openers tend to use radio frequencies.

Bigger remote control toys use radio.

Really old TV remotes might use ultrasound.

What are infrared rays?

Infrared rays are electromagnetic waves with a wavelength longer than the wavelength of visible 'red' light [or you could say they have a lower frequency than red light]. Infrared 'light' is used in TV remote controls to transmit information to an infrared receiver on the TV, and also in security systems to create an invisible 'light beam' that when broken, will send a signal back to the system.
