Best Answer

Mainland Portugal has five regions.

1. The Alentejo Region [Região do Alentejo] in the south is known as the bread basket of Portugal. It's the most important area in the world for cork oak [sobreiro]. The bark of one tree yields about 4,000 wine bottle corks. The region has one World Heritage Site: the historic center of Évora with its medieval walls and Roman temple.

2. The Algarve Region [Região do Algarve] has a thriving economy from fish, fruit [including oranges, laranja do Algarve], seafood, and tourism. Sagres Point [Ponta de Sagres] is connected with Prince Henry the Navigator [March 4, 1394 - November 13, 1460] and the magnificent Portuguese Age of Discoveries.

3. The Central Region [Região Centro] has many fortresses and castles that are classified as national monuments along its mountainous border with Spain. It's one of the richest regions. It has an abundance of Natural Resources. The region also has two World Heritage Sites: the Batalha Monastery [Mosteiro Santa Maria da Vitória]; and the Convent of the Order of Christ [Convento de Cristo].

4. The Lisbon Region [Região de Lisboa] mainly includes the Lisbon Metropolitan Area. It's the wealthiest region and the cultural center of Portugal. This region has three World Heritage Sites: the Monastery of Santa Maria d'Alcobaça [Mosteiro de Santa Maria de Alcobaça]; the Monastery of the Hieronymites [Mosteiro dos Jerónimos] with the Tower of Belem [Torre de Belém]; and the town of Sintra with its 19th century architecture.

5. The North Region [Região Norte] is famous for four UNESCO World Heritage Sites: the Alto Douro Wine Region; the Prehistoric Rock-Art Sites in the Côa Valley; the historic center of Guimarães with its historical medieval monuments; and the historic center of Porto.
