The man who settled colonial Rhode Island was named Roger Williams. He, a minister from Massachusetts, was banished from the colony because he did not believe that people should be prosecuted for their religious practices. In his view, the government shouldn't force people to worship a certain way. This lead Williams to establish Rhode Island, the first place in America where persons of all faiths could worship and practice as they wished.
The Baptists under Roger Williams leadership, was the predominate denomination until the end of the Revolutionary War. For many years, they would not allow the Episcopalians to worship because of their ties to the Church of England which had discriminated against the Baptists in England. They committed the same discriminatory practices against the Episcopal Church until 1783. Today, the Baptists are practically nonexistent and the Episcopal Church is the most influential of all the non-Catholic churches in Rhode Island.
