The Bella Coola people are a Nation not a tribe. The Nuxalk Nation lived in longhouses. Because they lived along the river the houses that were around flood areas were on stilts. Some houses could be taken apart and moved as families had hunting grounds and fishing grounds.

The tribes of the Pacific Northwest differed in food, dwellings, etc. according to their exact location. As far as housing/shelter, there were two basic types.

  1. Those people of the coastal regions had permanent homes called Longhouses made of cedar planks. The building was shared by 3-4 related families. There were no windows, and the roof was slanted or shed-like. Rush mats might cover the earth floors.
  2. Inland tribes moved searching for food, and therefore their homes were built of sod huts, or they were portable shelters (tepees) made of buffalo skins or reeds. Sometimes they simply lived in caves. For winter their homes were round and dome-shaped for protection from the winter weather. These were primarily willow frames covered with sod.
