However, she weakened before landfall in southeastern Louisiana: during its first landfall here, maximum sustained winds were 125 mph (category 3), down to 120 mph (still category 3) while making landfall near the LA/MS border.

The Progression of Hurricane KatrinaWhen Hurricane Katrina passed over Florida it was only a category 3 but it built up power whilst moving over the Gulf of Mexico. It reached it's peak when it was over the Gulf (category 5- the highest it can be). When it hit New Orleans on August 29, 2005 at 8:00 a.m, it was a high category 4 therefore causing masses of devastation to occur mainly to the people who were not able to evacuate the area.

Hurricane Katrina was followed by Tropical Storm Lee and then Hurricane Maria, neither of which affected the North American mainland. However, Hurricane Rita in September came just 4 weeks after Katrina, reflooding some areas of New Orleans that had been pumped dry.

The next major storm to affect New Orleans was Hurricane Gustav in 2008.
