Depending on the country and state, there is often a fuel tax on gasoline/petrol.
Fuel tax can be a form of sales tax, but in some countries there may be taxation on the extraction of fuel gas and liquids from the ground.
In addition there may also be an additional tax on gasoline/petrol in the form of Value Added Tax. (VAT)
