Papyrus is one of the most interesting and useful. It is a water reed that was used for making paper in ancient times. Today, it can no longer be found in the wild and only grows where cultivated.

Egypt is mainly a dry desert country with very little vegetation (there is allot of bare rock and sand). However there is a big river running though it and plants grow beside the river. Egypt is famous for the Papyrus plants that grow in the river (from which the first paper was made) and for the lotus plants to be found in the river. However Egypt also grows rice, corn and dates on the river blanks.

There are no trees growing in the Sahara Desert. There was a tree, Arbre du Ténéré, a solitary acacia, that grew on the caravan route through the Ténéré region of the Sahara in northeast Niger. The solitary tree was knocked down by a drunk truck driver in 1973. The tree was the last of a group of trees that grew in the Sahara when it was less parched than today.
