An eruption of pyroclastic material from a stratovolcano, also referred to as a composite cone, is the most violent type of volcanic activity. The extruded material range from large amounts of gases, fine ash, and lava bombs the size of cars.
Stratovolcanoes that often times turn into calderas have notoriously the most violent eruptions. This is due to the type of magma that is normally involved with the eruption. Rhyolite, Rhyodacite, and Andesite are most commonly associated with these types of volcanoes and are not very fluid. The sticky types of magma trap gasses within the magma chamber to often times extremely high pressures. The violence in the eruption is not caused by the build up of the pressure, but when the pressure is explosively released. This is different from Hawaiian style (Shield Volcanoes) due to the fact that they can build up all of the pressure but with Basalt magma being able to flow so easily, the second the pressure is released all the gas will escape through the erupting magma. With stratovolcanoes the pressure builds to such a critical level and is so viscous when the pressure releases the magma chamber goes through an explosive decompression sequence. This ability to not only maintain such a high pressure but to release the pressure explosively and all at once is what makes these types of volcanoes so destructive and violent.

The most violent volcanic eruptions are found in destructive/convergent plate boundaries. 80% of the world's active volcanoes are found occur along destructive boundaries. Acid-lava and composite volcanoes also cause the most violent eruptions as the lava is viscous and the opening of the volcano is sometimes blocked by hardened lava, causing a huge massive explosion during the eruption.
The most violent volcanic explosions are usually generated from composite volcanoes and andesitic lava flows. These types of eruptions can throw lava and other debris several miles into the atmosphere.
