During the winter in Valley Forge, food and supplies were scarce. A majority of the soldiers had a lack of, or improper, clothing for the winter weather. When spring arrived, bringing warmer weather, disease struck the army. Influenza, typhus, typhoid, and dysentery wiped out two-thirds of the soldiers.
There were over twelve thousand continental soldiers with George Washington during the time at Valley Forge.
At Valley Forge soldiers grew weak from not having enough food or warm clothing. Roughly a quarter of them died from malnutrition, exposure to the cold, or diseases such as smallpox and typhoid fever.

They were at Valley Forge because Pennsylvania was just captured so Valley Forge was a place to recuperate. It also had great strategical position.
