A dry red wine is generally best with a nice cut of beef. Cabernet Sauvignon is my favorite choice, but a merlot or even a nice, spicy Zinfandel go very well too. In the end, it's all about your own personal taste. You have to try a lot of wines--with food--to figure out what you like best. Keep notes on what you try so you'll know what you liked and how much it cost. And don't be surprised if your tastes change over time. As you try more wines, you may find you like now what you didn't like in the beginning.

The best wine for steak is normally considered to be a red wine, Cabernet or Burgundy are two typically paired with the strong taste of beef. They are somewhat dry with a tangy taste and strong tannins that cut through the fattiness of the meat.

Burgundy is Pinot Noir. A bit soft for steak. Try Shiraz or Cabernet.

Most people prefer a full-bodied red wine with steak. Merlot or cabernet are popular choices. Pinot noir is lighter and a little more delicate and works well with foods that are not overly spicy. Trader Joe's has a couple of low-priced carmenere wines from Chile that work very well with steak. Zinfandels tend to be pretty well paired with a BBQ steak.

The best answer, really, is to try a wine that you think you will enjoy rather than worrying too much about what others think you should enjoy.
