My dad told me that I should not put magnets on my refrigerator door that it makes the door rust form the inside out? Is there any truth to that?

Wow, a 49 caddy!!!!! The majority of door handles from this era were bolted on from inside the door. The door liner must be removed to access the bolts. If you have noticed the warm air blowing from behind your refrigerator, that is the heat that was in the air that is inside your refrigerator. If you leave the door open the air around the refrigerator will briefly feel cold, but it will warm back up and the food in the refrigerator will go bad.
yes Try it there will be a switch that you can press inside the fridge, that will simulate the door closing.
First you take off the door panel screws in inside door pull then take plastic trim off of inside door handle pry between outside frame work plastic and that thin gap then pop the plastic clips that hold the door panel to frame( gasket scraper wrapped in tape) and then pry. Inside of door will be exposed to work on then GOOD LUCK
