We have lots of wildlife - South Carolina is pretty rural, so there are lots of natural areas that attract animals. Our largest animals are brown bears, cougars (mountain lions), bobcats, alligators, and white-tailed deer. We also have large birds like pelicans, egrets, herons, geese, and turkeys. Smaller animals like foxes, coyotes, and beavers are less often seen, but fairly common. The only marsupial animal in the Americas, the oppossum, is quite common - it looks like a giant rat. Other common animals seen here include raccoons, chipmunks, squirrels, muskrats, skunks, and turtles. Birds like hawks, owls, buzzards (a type of vulture), crows, seagulls, ducks, and quail are quite common. Songbirds, such as wrens, cardinals, mockingbirds, and jays are wide-spread across the state. We have snakes such as rattlesnakes, moccasins, and copperheads, plus nonpoisonous ones like rat and corn snakes, garter snakes, and puff adders. You can also easily spot small animals like mice, moles, newts and salamanders, lizards, and frogs. Sea turtles come ashore on most beaches to lay eggs, and dolphins and rays are commonly seen in the ocean. Crayfish and shrimp can be found in fresh- and saltwater respectively. We also have many game fish such as bass, bream, and catfish. There are many insects also, since we are a semi-tropical state; scorpions are fairly common, as are "Palmetto Bugs" (really giant cockroaches!) and many kinds of beetles. We have lots of different Spiders, including black widow and brown recluse.
Among them are the Great Blue Heron, the Snowy Egret, and the Bald Eagle.

There are between 250 and 300 different soil types (aka soil 'series') in South Carolina. The majority of these soil types are in a category of soil called the Ultisols. As with biology, there is a taxonomic system for naming soils. The broadest categories are called soil 'orders.' It may help to think of them in the same way as the different 'kingdoms' in biology. Almost all the soils in South Carolina are in the soil order of Ultisols. Other orders found in SC include Entisols, which are very young soils, found in SC at the coast and in river floodplains. Inceptisols are also commonly found in the mountains.
