My advice would be to find other people with ADD in the area who are being treated, and find out who their doctor is and how well the treatment is working. You should be able to find someone pretty quickly that way. I had great effects from taking my kids to Sensory Integration therapy (an additional certification for Occupational Therapy), which gave them the skills they needed to cope. Also, I did maintain a structured lifestyle with homecooked meals, exercise and a set bedtime. They both have graduated from college and are doing well. There is a robust, valid test given by the therapist for the disorder (they don't label it ADD) and specific therapies are set up to resolve the issue. My kids went from being wired to being calm

and confident.

Opinion

I'm glad you asked how to find the right doctor because the best place to start is with a qualified mental health professional. Just because a GP has the ability to prescribe meds doesn't mean he knows how to assess ADD and administer proper doses. If you must get advice from a GP I would certainly get a second opinion.

Stimulants are sometimes used to treat ADD and firm discipline is almost always counterproductive. If a child is put on ADD meds, he should be monitored to see how they are affecting him. That includes asking him how the meds make him feel.

You should try an internet search in your area for ADHD specialists. You may find some interesting prospects by reading the reviews. Also, you can contact the school psychologist to ask if they could provide a list. You should also ask your child's pediatrician for a list of referrals. We are fortunate at this point in time to be able to check out medical professionals online.

CHADD (Children and Adults with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder- chadd.org) is a national support group that has chapters in most all metropolitan areas. You should seek out your local chapter, attend a meeting and ask for advice from the membership. They will know which doctors and other professionals to avoid and which ones who have a history of meaningful help.

A great person to ask would be your doctor. Also I would ask some of my friends to recommend someone. If you don't feel comfortable about asking for yourself say you are inquiring to help out a friend. Good Luck!!

A:

AS is 'untreatable'

I'm sorry to say its a case of get used to the way they are.

There is no right doctor to treat it because there is no treatment. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy may, within the slightest possibility help in some tiny way but its unlikely, very unlikely.

It's technically you who actually has to be 'treated'.

It seems very unfair I know, but its a lot easier than you think.

All you do is understand every time they do or say something they don't mean it like that. Ask them to try to explain what they mean so you can understand it, explain what you mean to them so they can understand you,

don't interprate any faces they make, don't interpret anything into what they say (I know that's very difficult, but I swear it really makes you a better person in the end, think about it, you become very understanding),

remember that they are not purposefully doing anything to hurt you,

and

in fact they don't even understand why it would hurt you(which is actually good to bear in mind when you think they have done something on purpose).

People are going to find them weird, unsociable, and not like them. Sometimes they seem normal and you will let the guards down that you learn to build up, but that's ok it will happen, just keep trying to remember the 'rules' and They will not change, no matter how much you want

AS is very difficult to have rules for -those are the rules I've learned to have with my own boyf who has a.s. You will probably have to find and figure out your own rules as aspergers sufferers have different problems, but I think mine will be a helpfull stepping stone for you.

Answer

If you are an adult, you could look for a support group in your area. That is a good way to get help and information from other people with AS.

If your child has AS, talk to your school counselor. They are more aware of AS now than in the past, and may be able to direct your child to a therapist.

This kind of therapy does not change or "cure" the person with AS, but it does help them learn how to interact with other people. Some people get great benefit from this kind of therapy, but some don't, as in the case above.

AS is treatable, but not curable.

There is no cure for AS and no standardized treatment for all AS patients. Specific treatments are based on the individual's symptom pattern. Some require medications for depression, hyperactivity, aggressive behavior, preoccupations, or anxiety. St. Johns wort is a popular alternative medication.

Most patients benefit from individual psychotherapy. Many children, and their parents, are helped by group therapy where they are with others facing the same problems.

Behavioral coaching has also been used to help adults learn to organize and set priorities for their daily activities.

A family physician should have adequate knowledge of ADHD and be able to diagnose and treat the disorder. However, in some cases referrals are made to psychiatrists or pediatricians who specialize in this area.

You either need to find a Family Doctor Who is experienced and comfortable diagnosing and treating mental illness, or you can see a Psychiatrist. After discussing your symptoms, most providers who feel you have ADHD or ADD will start a treatment plan. Do not expect to get an Rx for medication from anyone if you don't meet the criteria for a diagnosis!

Psychiatrists and Behavioural Specialists.

General practicioners, neurological specialists, and behavioral specialists. ADHD is a physiological disorder, not a psychological one. It may lead to unacceptable behaviors, but psychiatric treatment will not fix it.

Nearly all pediatricians or general practitioners can offer up guidelines as well as prescribe medication for ADHD! They will first ask questions about the patient's behavior, and performance at work or school, as well as at home. Mental health facilities may also help in finding a physician who specialized in care and treatment of ADHD.

What treatments are needed for ADHD?

Some people are able to manage their ADHD without any medication, but instead receive therapy and counseling. However, several people that use medication have reported that it helps a lot. The most common medication for ADHD is methylphenidate (Ritalin, Concerta), and can be obtained by asking your mental health doctor about it. Usually he/she will give you a free sample to try it out. The two major types of methylphenidate are Ritalin (quick release) and Concerta (slow/prolonged release) which both have similar effects.
