Percussion instruments are divided up by the way they make their sound.
Membranophones: the prefix refers to a membrane, such as a drum head. Membranophones are the largest category of percussion instruments; based on the classification system, they can be further divided by shape or method of playing (hands, sticks, etc.).
Idiophones: the prefix idio- means self, so idiophones make sounds when they themselves vibrate. The most common type of idiophone is the struck idiophone, which sounds when it is hit, such as the xylophone, cymbal, or triangle. Other idiophones may sound by plucking or friction.
Chordophones: the prefix refers to chords or strings. Although most stringed instruments are bowed, a few are hit or plucked (i.e. percussed), and are found in the percussion section; the harp is played by plucking, and the piano is played with felt hammers hitting the strings.
