With three exceptions, arteries carry oxygen-rich blood from the lungs to the body organs and the veins carry oxygen poor blood and waste products to the heart.

The exceptions are:

  • the pulmonary veins return blood from the lungs to the heart;
  • the portal veins receive oxygenated blood from the pyloric, gastric, cystic, superior mesenteric, and splenic veins and carry it to the liver;
  • the umbilical vein carries blood to the fetus from the mother's placenta.
