The Spanish-American War.

While the Spanish- American War was instrumental in attaining independence from Spain the movement actually started following the American Civil War. Cuba declared independence on October10, 1868, followed by the Ten Year War. It was with the help of Teddy Roosevelt that Cuba became a Republic on May 20,1902.
