∙ 8y agoWell, he was the 16th President of the United States at that time and that made him the Commander in Chief of all the Union forces. His election as well as his determination to keep the Union together both were factors in the beginning of the war, but he definitely didn't cause it. It was something that had been a long time coming because of gigantic disagreements between different parts of the US.

After the civil war was over between the t wo parts of America. He saw to it that the defeated side were not punished and treated unfairly , and that they were more like brothers who had made a big mistake, all was forgotten, and the task of rebuilding began.

A strong, calm leader who could control an unruly cabinet and presently learned to select and make good use of the best Generals.
Undoubtedly one of the great men of history, though often praised wrongly as the liberator of the slaves. He was not an abolitionist, and issued the famous Proclamation as a wartime tactic to force the British to abandon their plans aid the Confederacy.
He remains as a prime example of the self-taught - a humble young man of almost no education who learned to read people and situations with great insight, and had the strength of character to control the forces around him.
