California's proposition 8 (2008) (also called the California Marriage Protection Act) was a public referendum seeking to amend the California State Constitution to eliminate the then existing right of same-sex couples to legally marry in California. California voters passed the initiative by 52% to 48% on November 5, 2008. Immediately, same-sex couples were no longer able to obtain marriage licenses in California, but same-sex marriages performed before that date were still valid.
The United States Supreme Court issued a decision on June 26, 2013, which resulted in the resumption of same-sex marriages in the state of California on June 28, 2013.

∙ 12y agoProp 8 means that we as a community are trying to help define marriage. Gays and lesbians can still get, "married", but it is not called married now, it is paired, or bonded. They can get "married" yes. But it is not called that now.
