In August 1877 Alexander Graham Bell installed what is thought to be the first telephone in England at Torr Home, the imposing residence of Robert Bayly, a local timber merchant. The connection was between the main house and the lodge. Torr is now a residential care home for the elderly. The telephone was presented to the Plymouth Museum and Art Gallery in Tavistock Road.
