1 He developed and perfected the fledgling form of the the symphony, going on to write 106 of them between 1758 and 1795 (104 numbered ones plus two un-numbered ones)
2 He more or less invented the genre of the string quartet in the early 1760s, a form which has endured to this day
3 He taught Beethoven for a while but found he could teach him little. Haydn was one of the few musicians who recognised that after Beethoven, nothing would ever be the same again.
His principle importance is for the development of the symphony and string quartet genres.
