Washington was a surveyer before he got into the military at a very young age (I believe he was still in his late teens when he joined the American "militia" (more of an American division to the british army). Between stints in the military, he did alot of farming, I believe, and married a wealthy woman (Martha) which allowed him to pretty well do as he pleased.

Prior to his military service, George Washington worked as a land surveyor. He was the second son of a wealthy plantation owner, and imagined his brother would carry on the family tradition. However, his brother died, and George became the new heir of his father's plantation and slaves.

Before being elected the first president of the U.S., George Washington was a surveyor and worked surveying land belonging to Thomas Fairfax in the Shenandoah Valley. He subsequently entered the military and fought the French in Ohio. After that, he became an aide to the British general Edward Braddock, and helped take Fort Duquesne from the French around late 1750s. He then got married to Martha and mostly managed his family estate at Mount Vernon. He supposedly didn't want independence for the colonies, but didn't like the way the British exercised their authority on them. Supposedly he took charge of the Virginia troops before the Revolutionary War actually started, although who appointed him to that task, I have no idea. The Continental Congress then made him Commander of the Continental Army in 1775. The last position he held before being elected was Chairman of the Constitutional Convention of 1787 and was instrumental in getting the Constitution ratified.
