Irving Berlin
What was Irving Berlin's first famous song? The song that put irving-berlinon the musical map was "alexander-s-ragtime-band" - a song that wasn't ragtime, at all. Born Israel Baline in Russia on this date in 1888, Berlin didn't even know how to read or write music; but, picking tunes out on the piano, on the black keys only, he became one of America's most prolific songwriters. He wrote some 1,000 songs, including best-selling standards like "white-christmas," "cheek-to-cheek," and "there-s-no-business-like-show-business." But, Berlin has said that his own favorite was "god-bless-america." He donated all proceeds from that song to the boy-scouts-of-america-2.
Irving Berlin was an American composer and lyricist, and wrote the lyrics and music for his own songs. He composed over 3,000 songs, including many that made a huge impact on music worldwide such as "God Bless America", "White Christmas", and "There's No Business Like Show Business."
