What was Israel's connection to the last Columbia mission?

Ilan Ramon was the first Israeli astronaut, and the first Israeli to travel into space. He was a national hero even before he lost his life when Colombia disintegrated in February 2003. He carried into space a number of items significant to Jewish people, including a sketch from a teenager who died in Auschwitz and a microfiche copy of the Torah.
