There is no real "purpose" of LSD. It's just a chemical that has a strange reaction with the human brain. It was first discovered by Albert Hofmann in 1938 while he was doing pharmaceutical research on ergot fungus. He unintentionally ingested some through his fingertips and discovered it's psychedelic effects. People take it for it's powerful mind altering effects and many people (including myself) have had life changing experiences while using it.
