Because they lost the fight, Lincoln realized he needed a larger army. Thus, he called for 75,000 men to fight. This was problematic because it caused the move of Virginia, North Carolina, Tennessee, and Arkansas to the Confederate States of America.

US President Lincoln truly believed the Southern rebellion would be short lived and only asked for the number of troops he thought were needed. Their enlistment was for only three months.

It must be noted that Lincoln expected to lose Fort Sumter. The fort was isolated from any close by support.
